Our people

Marilise Turnbull, Principal Consultant

Marilise has 20 years’ senior management and advisory experience in the humanitarian and social development sectors in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.

Marilise has considerable expertise in the fields of disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation (CCA) and resilience.  She established Oxfam’s Adaptation and Risk Reduction Unit in 2007 and steered Oxfam’s towards becoming a recognised actor and voice for resilience. She produced the UN Status Report on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa (UNISDR, 2009), and is a co-author of Toward Resilience (ECB, 2013), a practitioner’s guide to DRR and CCA programming and advocacy.

Marilise has managed major humanitarian responses to conflict and natural disasters, and has experience in food security, WASH, shelter and Protection programming. Her recent work includes evaluations of international NGOs’ humanitarian programmes in Sierra Leone, Mali, Kenya, Colombia and Haiti.

A keen promoter of learning at all levels, Marilise is currently a tutor for the Humanitarian Aid Studies Centre and for the UNFPA’s staff development programme. She is a skilled trainer, facilitator and communicator, and speaks English, French and Spanish.
